Our Mission
Brief History
In a 1996 quality of life study conducted by the Fayetteville Chamber of
Commerce through the Metro Visions process, Cumberland County residents
identified "juvenile crime" as a red flag issue, one that demanded
immediate attention. The study also indicated that a fragmented delivery
system existed in the community that gets in the way of rational,
effective services and the most effective utilization of state and local
funds. Cumberland County spends more than $3,000,000 annually in local and state
dollars to detain our youth in state-operated training schools and
detention centers. No single location for receiving, processing and
intervention services was available for juveniles and their families
until the proposal to plan and implement the Juvenile Assessment Center.
The planning phase was an ongoing process since January of 1997, when a
mufti-agency planning team was formed to begin planning for the Juvenile
Assessment Center. The planning team was divided into 4 subcommittees,
each focusing on an issue critical to the success of the Juvenile
Assessment Center. Goals
To improve prevention and intervention services for
delinquent and at-risk youth and their families. This is done by
establishing partnerships with juvenile justice agencies, youth service
providers and private youth programs and providing a central intake point
for youth who have been referred for services.
This is done by offering the following:
